have said obama has not helped them. he got himself a resident front of the white house. >> won this was last thing discussed in the bush administration, there were members and members on the hill every day. i'm not saying that now appears it >> thank you very much for your time -- i'm not saying it seems -- i'm guessing that now. >> thank you very much for your time. . most recently, the obama administration's stated that week are giving them $123 million, and the opposition stated they wanted more than that. how can we defeat them when we are supplying them? at the same time, we have issues like benghazi and helicopter that had a hard crash landing in south korea this week, and nobody has covered that at all. is west, texas connected to the boston marathon bombing? was that a cover-up so they could do what they wanted to do in west, texas? how much fertilizer was taken away before the explosion occurred? does anybody have any control over that? i just don't see how we can defeat al qaeda and terrorism if we continue to put everyone on frites welfare without giving any drug test and saying you have 30, 90 days to get on welfare and get off and get you a job, things like that. we just need to bring back our moral values and ethics and hold our politicians to a standa make em up and do what they said they would do. host: thanks for the call. we will let his comments stand, unless you want to respond to anything he said. fort: is not unco
as a public service by your television provider. >> president obama was briefed by phone monday about the boston marathon bombings. seated with the president in his white house photo is homeland's security adviser lisa and the white house chief of staff. after this photo was taken, the president also spoke briefly at the white house about these attacks. >> good afternoon, everybody. was briefed byi my homeland security team about the events in boston. we are continuing to monitor and respond to the situation as the situation unfolds. state and local authorities protect our people, increased security, and investigate what happened. american people will say prayer for the boston people tonight and we say our prayers for the families and victims in the wake of this senseless loss. we do not yet have all the answers but we do know multiple people have been wounded, some gravely, in the explosions of the boston marathon. i have spoken to the fbi director and they are mobilizing the appropriate resources to investigate and to respond. i have updated leaders of congress from both parties and
. and with all the challenges our veterans face, i was pleased that president obama's budget request included a proposal for new transition assistance program that would help our veterans adjust to civilian life. i won't ask you now because i know there are many people who have questions, but i would hope that you could share with us the key components of the new transition assistance program and if you could describe how educational opportunities will be incorporated, what changes will be made to strengthen job search skills and job placement? my time may be up, so if you can just -- i don't know, mr. chairman, if you'd like secretary hagel just to share that. it's a concern for so many of us in our communities. >> if i might just make a very brief response, mr. chairman, if it's appropriate. and then i will provide details for the record for all the members. this is what i would say. hen i came to this job and i said very clearly i had priorities like anyone who is taking on a new job. certainly my first priority is the defense of this country and that's what the president and the congress
. there are many unanswered questions still going on in this investigation. president obama addressed the topic of unanswered questions last night when he talked to the country after the capture of the second suspected bombing suspect. this is what the president had to say. [video clip] >> obviously tonight there are still many unanswered questions. among them, why did young man who grew up and study here as part of our communities and country resort to such violence? how did they plan and carry out these attacks and did they receive any help? the families of those killed so senselessly deserve answers. the wounded, some of who have to learn how the sand, and walk, and again, deserve answers. we will continue to deploy all the necessary resources to support the investigation, to collect intelligence, and to protect our citizens. we will determine what happened, we will investigate any associations these terrorists may have had, and we will continue to do whatever we had to do to keep our people safe. host: that was the president last night making the announcement that in fact the second suspect

. president obama recently appointed him to of the advisory committee for trade policy and negotiations. provides policy advice on trade matters, and he and i work together a number of significant matters during his years in the house. we're glad to have you back here. please go ahead. >> thank you. members of the committee, thank you for inviting me to testify before you today. and on behalf of the border security and in it -- modernization act of 2013 i had the privilege of serving in the united states congress from 1985 to 2007, representing -- representing t fifth and eighth congressional district. immigration has always been a issue in this border district. i applaud the senators in the so-called gang of eight who spent many months preparing this legislation. the bill currently before the committee is an excellent start that offers many possible provisions. others on this panel will discuss various economic considerations, but i want to talk about one particular provision, completing family unification. i know, as the partner of an immigrant how difficult it can be to build a life
on and we may i think it was good. one young man samba i work and -- said i work for a pro-obama program. police said he worked for the president. for theid he worked president. that is a difficult thing. people, i waslasted for being out of touch. statistics are not great. hoover may have gotten 2/3 of the american vote. the south side chicago was republican. for each you tell me the reason their patent is because of this strategy, it may have cemented the change but it happened during the great depression. the change happened among whites and blacks. this increase in ninth team 36 when they did this. vote was here. the have '90s term of the people voting for lbj. the strategy is after that. people write that are wrong. everybody had an opinion. that to do with the lack of hadomic emancipation -- it to do with the lack of economic of already done this. we will continue to do that. anybody who thinks it will be the one we will switch, thing that it was the amazing switch. if you could get a republican that occurred switch the vote, things would be topsy-turvy. of ohio to 5% voting republ
. congress passed a law in 2007 requiring that the 100% of the e 0%operationally controlled." president obama and secretary napolitano abandoned that metric. the bill before us weakens that law by only requiring the southern border to be 90% effectively secured. in some sectors. only the so-lled high risk sectors. what about the other six? before green cards are allocated to those here illegally, the secretary only has to certify that the security plans and fencing's are "substantially deployed, operational, and completed." if the secretary does not do her job and a commission is created to provide recommendations, this is just a loophole that allows the secretary to neglect doing the job. another area of interest for me is employment verification measures. as i said before so many times, i was here in 1986 when we for the first time made it illegal for employers to hire undocumented individuals. i have been a champion for the e-verify system a staple in every workplace. it is an important tool to make sure that we have a legal work force. while i am encouraged, i am concerned that the provis
has actually been on for the last two years -- now remember immediately after president obama became president, the united states took on a stimulus program, an enormous stimulus program of a little over $700 billion and that actually created the start of the rebirth of the american economy, but only lasted for a year, year and half and we undertook at the behest at the request of my republican colleagues an austerity budget over the decades beginning in 2011. we will see nearly $2 trillion reduction in federal expenditures in the 10-year period. that is what austerity is all about. and today, if you were trying to get on an airplane somewhere in the united states, you were beginning to see yet one more effect of austerity. and that is the air traffic controllers going on furlough so that one day out of 10, air traffic controllers will not be working, meaning there will be a shortage. some say they should have moved the money around and did it some other way, but that's not the way the austerity program is in the united states and not the way the sequestration law is written. sequest
. they did not give mr. obama and the first lady the deed to the white house. they give them a four-year lease. [laughter] they will have to leave area and what will happen between now and then and what will happen after they are gone. we need to be guided by those that helped make that possible. we need to use this window of time properly. if we relax and act like the struggle is over, we will end up worse than it was before we started. [applause] i would like each of you to take two minutes to tell us where you see where we are and where we are generally headed. i just want an overview from you, then i want to go to our legends. >> thank you very much. to the pastor of the church, great to be in this beautiful place this morning. [applause] reverend al sharpton, another big round of applause. [applause] thank him for his friendship and my colleagues on the panel, i am the brother in the middle. and to the legends over on my left and you're right. i want to join in saying thank you to all of them for their sacrifices and hard work to help us to where we are, which is standing on t
